What does it mean by CUSIP? CUSIP (Committee on Uniform Securities Identification Procedures), established in 1962, invented a method of identifying the securities; more precisely the securities registered in either U.S. or Canada with the municipal as well as U.S. government bonds. This system took effect from 1967. The CUSIP generates a unique number for each of the stocks that are a combination of numbers & letters of 9 characters long. This number contains various information like, the issuing company, security type and all those that helps in identifying the stock from millions of other stocks. There is an order in the 9 characters of the CUSIP number. Initial six characters represent the issue and are in alphabetical order; characters on the seventh and eighth position represents the type of issue with either alphabetical or numerical character; and the last character that always happens to be numerical, represent the check digit. It is a service of inter-industry security coding which means that it is applicable for all sorts of industry with uniqueness. |
