What is HMO
HMO abbreviation is Health Maintenance Organization.
It is basically a type of MCO i.e Managed Care Organization which provides a type of health care coverage in USA. HMO will have a contract with Hospitals, providers, and Doctors.
HMO will cover only the care which is rendered by the doctors and professionals who primarily agreed for treating the patients according to the HMO guidelines.
Normally if you are an HMO insurance member, then yuo need to first select a PCP (primary care physician). PCP is also a doctor who is like a bridge or access to medical services. So in most cases, you will be referred to a specialist through a PCP doctor. Only if it is a medical emergency then you can directly go to a specialist.
Most of the time PCPs are pediatricians, family doctors, internists etc..
